Good introduction to woodcarving
Just as the title says this is a good introductory text for the person interested in starting woodcarving. There is not a lot of in-depth information about each type of carving, but there is enough to get you started in the right direction.Types of carving included are line, relief, in the round, bird, and carved gifts, with a few patterns of each type. If you already know the basics of your type of woodcarving, a more detailed book would be a better investment. If you are curious about what tools you might need, some basics of types of wood, a few patterns for your first project, how to get your tools really sharp, basic techniques of making cuts, and how to finish your projects this book will serve you well. Also included in this book are sections on starting a woodcarving club and lists of publications, tool and wood suppliers, books, and sources of glass eyes and bird feet.If you do decide to continue with woodcarving I strongly urge you to find a woodcarving club...

I feel better now
I have wanted to carve wood for some time, but had no idea how to go about learning. Most of the books I've looked at were either too technical or too advanced for me. Finally, this book has given me the confidence to begin. The discussions are well written at a level that's good for a beginner like me. I read the entire book in about 3 hours and am now going back and starting my first project. The projects look doable and I know what I'm supposed to be learning in each one. Unlike most books, this one doesn't assume a progression from project to project so that you have to do them all--whether they interest you or not. I like being able to focus on whittling or chip work and being able to put off other types until I have a reason to do them.

Just what I needed
I had to buy some chisels quickly for an art class of mine, and when I ordered these, they came in by the end of the week. When I finally started to use them, they worked great! I used them on plaster, and they carve through it beautifully. They are easy to handle and have good curvatures for cutting into the plaster.A few odd things: The pieces shown and the ones I received varied slightly. I got a hooked chisel in place of one of the straight ones. The hooked one also tore through the bag. Lastly, the metal rings on the handles are somewhat loose, but don't seem to cause a problem.Overall, though, these work great and I would definitely buy them again.

Good, and inexpensive assortment bag
This bag gives you a nice assortment of balsa wood that comes in various sizes and thicknesses. If you are just looking for a solid pack of thick wood so you can make things or carve things then this bag is a pretty good choice. Balsa wood can be rather expensive, especially when you get accurately cut pieces as in the sheets used for model airplane making. This bag is a nice bargain at a great price if you want some balsa to have on hand for various projects. I use it for carving, airplanes, castles, and various projects because it is so easy to work with.

Not what I expected
I was ordering these for my church nursery class for their "Noah" curriculum (they "build" and "hammer" little pieces of wood), and when I saw these I thought they would be perfect. But they're too tiny and skinny for what I need. In the picture, it looks like they are bigger pieces of wood, but they're very tiny. Not at all what I expected, and I can't return them because Amazon will charge me $6 shipping for something that weighs little more than a marshmallow. Guess I'm stuck with them.

Happy fingers
I have both the finger and thumb guard. I carve using pocket knives, and these have been really helpful. They do take some getting used to, but after I broke mine in the benefits outweighed the different feel. The guards are less about preventing cuts and more about preventing sore digits for me. I choke up on the blade of my knife for more leverage, and the index guard really prevents the soreness I usually have after a few hours. The thumb guard does prevent the little micro-cuts that happen at the end of a cut sometimes, but mainly it just protects from soreness that comes from pulling on cuts toward the thumb. The guards seem designed for hands that are meatier than mine, but they are still pretty comfortable and the elastic keeps them on pretty well. This is a surprisingly high quality product for this low price.

Necessary protection.
These things have proved their value and protection several times over since I bought them. Wouldn't work around craft knives without them. Almost overnight shipping too!

Blank Barrage
This is a must buy for anybody new to wood carving. The amount of beautiful Basswood I received was wonderful. I can practice away learning techniques without any consideration to loss or waste. I bought this box to learn. Twenty pounds is a lot of lessons. The wood is clear of knots. The Basswood is very fragrant and wonderful to work with as a beginner. For 35.00 delivered to my door, I recommend anybody invest in this quantity for their beginning work. At this point, I have no idea how this wood would hold up to an expert carver's opinion but I have a lot of time before I need to worry about that.

A Very good Buy !
I was very pleased with the good selection of sizes of basswood in this 20 LB box. The quality of the wood was also very good with very few pieces showing bark, deformaty or damage- it was all usable wood. Most of the pieces were 4 side surfaced. I have ordered some more basswood from a 'carving supply company' at the same time- this wood is equal in quality to the carving stock wood...and is much less expensive. The only reason to order 'carving stock' would be to obtain specific sized wood. For everyday whittling and carving...this is the stuff.

Better Have a Bandsaw/Tablesaw
Let me get one thing out of the way first. The quality of the wood is excellent. In the shipment that I received, the wood was clear, with only one or two pieces showing minor edge defects. With few exceptions, it was finished on all sides.Now why, if I'm so happy with it, did I only give it 4 stars? The reason is very simple. Unless you usually carve using large blocks of wood, you'd better have a way to cut it down into thinner pieces. Except for one small board (and I'm reaching by calling it a board) this "assortment" contains nothing but fairly large blocks.So, if you want to use the wood for carving plaques or other items requiring 3/4" or thinner wood, you're going to have to saw this stuff down. To do so accurately, you will need a bandsaw or a table saw.Again, although this is a very good value (it's actually cheaper from Rockler) be aware that you might not be able to use it for general carving without some prep work.

Historical prospective on Wood Carving
As a beginning wood carver I was looking for books to help me get started. There are lots of picture books that are a great help. This one takes a very different approach. There are suggestions for the tools to buy to get started. All 24 of them. There is information on sharpening the tools etc. However this book is written for the apprentice wood carver preparing to make a living carving decorative work for furniture, buildings and so on. You see this book was written one hundred years ago. It is a wonderful book to get started working with wood carving, but also to understand some of the history. Highly recommended.

I can see why they are sold online and not in stores – no one would ever buy them at any price if they could see them first. I got a hooked chisel in place of one of the straight ones. The different shapes weren’t evenly ground, most weren’t just dull – they weren’t even nearly finished. Overall, though, these work great and I would definitely buy them again. I had to buy some chisels quickly for an art class of mine, and when I ordered these, they came in by the end of the week.

I carve it all the time now and wish I could find huge logs but here in the deep and dirty south we just don’t have it. It is a joy to carve cuts like butter with predictable grain and holds detail as good as any wood that I have carved. The thought of buying carving wood sure enough “roughed my smooth”.
